Broadway Overpass

Kansas City, MO | 2011

el dorado, GBA and Derek Porter worked with MoDOT to replace the Broadway Overpass above I-670 in downtown Kansas City. The project is another step toward reconnecting the Downtown Loop with the Crossroads neighborhood and was rebuilt as part of the opening of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. It’s intended to encourage pedestrian movement over the highway, while meeting functional requirements of guardrails and lighting. Our design focuses on the interaction of common materials on an intimate scale: steel, chain link fencing, acrylic soundstop panels and light, both natural and artificial. The guardrails evolved out of an exploration of the impact of light and color on the perception of space.
