Park Central Apartments

Kansas City's Armour Boulevard was designed by the famous landscape architect George Kessler around the turn of the century. The street is a product of the City Beautiful movement, with standard 100 foot right of way, tall deciduous trees, and a number of historic buildings, both single family residences and multi-story dwellings. We just completed a historic renovation of one of those dwellings. Park Central Apartments, an 8-story former apartment hotel at 300 East Armour Boulevard, is one of several stately 1920s apartment buildings along this stretch of Armour that had fallen into disrepair over the last few decades. Fall Color in Waldo

The planted roof at the Botwin Building has really kicked in. We used an extensive garden roof system from Hydrotech, and planted Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium Scoparium). We really like the interplay between the shaggy rust-colored grass and Anne Lindberg's line-based artwork, which is integral to the second-floor storefront system. Last week the Botwin Building was a big winner at the AIA Kansas City Design Awards, taking home one of three honor awards, the highest distinction given by the jury. From A Basement on the Hill

We just finished work on a residence for a family of five in Lawrence, Kansas that included a complete basement renovation and the addition of a darkroom with a planted roof. It's a modern take on the traditional "walk-out basement" that engages both the existing house and the land around it. The darkroom is built into the hillside, with lighting integrated into its limestone facade. Custom cypress doors open onto an intimate patio with a fire pit for chilly nights.
