We just finished work on a residence for a family of five in Lawrence, Kansas that included a complete basement renovation and the addition of a darkroom with a planted roof. It's a modern take on the traditional "walk-out basement" that engages both the existing house and the land around it. The darkroom is built into the hillside, with lighting integrated into its limestone facade. Custom cypress doors open onto an intimate patio with a fire pit for chilly nights. On Friday, November 5th, sans façon, a pair of artists from Glasgow, Scotland, brings their traveling installation Limelight to Kansas City. The work is a simple urban intervention. Throughout the last few months, in cities across the UK, sans façon has switched off all the streetlights on one street and replaced two of the them with theatre spotlights. The result, in the words of the artists, is "somewhere between spectacle and surveillance." The lights transfom the street into a stage and passers-by into performers, prompting any number of reactions – spastic dances, graceful pirouettes, passionate kisses, impressive displays of physical strength and athleticism, or awkward pacing and nervous laughter. el dorado fabricated a series of custom steel tables for two gallery shows by Cary Esser, an acclaimed ceramics artist and faculty member of the Kansas City Art Institute. Lay of the Land at the Sherry Leedy Gallery runs until Saturday, October 30th. (Re)Form, at the H&R Block Artspace, runs until December 18th. (more...)
