Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence
Lawrence, KS | 2007
The Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence had outgrown the one-room schoolhouse it used for a meeting hall and selected el dorado to consider strategies for renovation and expansion. The addition balances the puritan sensibilities of the early 1900’s structure with the organic sensibilities of an ever-evolving fellowship. Through the addition of a new “garden” entry, the addition literally embraces its historic counterpart, while simultaneously responding to site and scale in fresh, new ways. A shaded back porch and sliding door system dissolves boundaries between the new sanctuary and the east facing playground area, allowing the different generations of the Fellowship to remain connected through casual morning activities and evening potlucks.
