Mardi Gras Float 2004

Mardi Gras in the Crossroads Arts District is centered around YJ’s Snack Bar, the Center of the Universe for Kansas City’s arts crowd. Rain, sleet, snow or shine, it involves a street party and a parade. And some times the police. But that’s another story for another day. The basic concept behind BaDDaSS, our Bacon Distributing Device and Salzer Spinner, was developed in an intensive ten minute collaborative meeting with our co-conspirator / ELWOOD LLC business partner Jim Woodfill. It was determined that many of the floats and revelers would be distributing beads and dubloons in standard Mardi Gras fashion. We decided that we should distribute slices of hot crispy bacon. Manning the crows nest of our collaboratively-designed and fabricated mobile fortress for most of the night was our own Steve Salzer, who’s mother scored us the 100 pounds of street legal “grade B but edible” bacon via some questionable paperwork and a small amount of cash. No one got hurt except for Dan, who got a little mace in his eyes, no problem.
