The AIA Kansas City Design Excellence Awards were held at the Studio Dan Meiner last Friday. Overall, more than 100 projects were submitted for consideration and 16 projects were awarded that evening. El dorado was among those named, and received four awards in the categories of architecture and the People’s Choice Award.

The Speculative Office Building in Leawood, Kansas received an honor award in the architecture category. el dorado was hired as architect and general contractor to complete the shell construction of the 18,000 square foot, two-story building. The project features a simple rectangular floor plan, concrete structure, and an all glass enclosure with a carefully positioned exterior perforated metal scrim system that helps regulate heat gain throughout the year. The straightforward elegance of the building stands in stark contrast to the small-windowed, beige-colored, mansard-roofed professional buildings that are the norm in this part of suburban Kansas City.

Volland General Store was named the People’s Choice Award and also received a citation award in the architecture category. We were thrilled to work with Patty and Jerry Reece on this historic renovation in the Flint Hills, and are pleased to see the project gain much-deserved recognition. Kratzer Brothers Mercantile opened in October 1913 and served as a destination until it closed in 1971 after Otto Kratzer’s death. In 2013, Patty and Jerry purchased the neglected building, deciding to put the building back into community service. While the roof, first and second floors had collapsed, the masonry shell was left structurally intact. El dorado worked with the Reeces to create a large, open space for events and exhibitions and a second-story living space at the back, above a catering kitchen and restrooms. Our design solution celebrates the simple form of the existing building and honors the integrity of original materials and the subtle context of the surrounding tall grass prairie.

Byers Residence received a citation award in the architecture category. The Byers family had clear vision for their new home on a stretch of prairie southeast of Kansas City. They desired the public space of their house to be spatially open with an abundance of light. We worked with them to create a dynamic floor plan hosting an abundance natural light and expansive western views that capture the subtlety of the Midwestern landscape and drama of the Missouri sky with influences from the site’s horizon line, dramatic skies and modern simplicity.
